From the Calavon Valley, Gordes offers an indelible image. Neither picturesque nor exotic, since the model is repeated throughout the south of France and throughout Italy. But yes perfect. Gordes lacks nothing. It is the typical medieval town, elevated and fortified, which has preserved its essence and beauty.
Provence has been for long periods a frontier land. Already in Roman times, members of the Vordenses tribe took refuge here, who ended up giving the town its name. Later, Provence was separated from the great feudal kingdoms that were taking shape in France. It was in the hands of the Kings of Burgundy and the Counts of Barcelona, the Holy Roman Empire and the Angevin kings, but none of them held it for long. And in between, it suffered the violent attacks of the Normans and the Saracens.
Later, during the Hundred Years’ War, the general chaos and its distant position from Paris made it easy prey for mercenaries. The Free Companies, called rutiers in France, fond of looting and looting, wreaked havoc, and forced the population to seek refuge in these famous hanging villages, so uncomfortable, so necessary. Centuries later, more of the same, with the bloody Wars of Religion that also devastated Provence in particular.
That has been the story of Gordes: a defensive enclave, closed for centuries. Hence its austere and solid appearance.
Today everything has changed. Gordes does not attract enemy armies but tourists, and welcomes them with good restaurants and museums and activities. In the last fifty years it has been a refuge for many artists. Pol Mara, Vasarely, Chagall. Some stayed to live and others have created foundations and museums, decorating the town.
But let’s stop with generalities and go into details. When you go to Gordes you will want to see, above all, the Castle and the Church of San Fermín. And then stroll through the labyrinthine streets that overlook the precipice and that the Gordiens call calades.
